Hoffa (1992)

With his roles in It’s Always Sunny Philadelphia, Taxi and Throw Mama From the Train, it can be easy to forget just how skilled Danny DeVito is at drama. Regardless of whether he’s in front of the camera or behind it, DeVito knows how to create tension in a scene and pulls this off with mastery as director of Hoffa. Based on the unsolved disappearance of ruthless Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa, played by Jack Nicholson, the violent biopic earned two Oscar wins. Oddly enough, Nicholson’s performance was both trashed and praised by critics at the time, earning him both a Golden Globe and Razzie nomination for best and worst actor. Watch it and judge for yourself which category his portrayal falls belongs in.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

It’s really no surprise that Pulp Fiction ranks so highly with Netflix viewers. Tarantino’s landmark film expertly straddles the line between thriller and comedy and has firmly cemented its spot in pop culture. Even if you’ve already seen Tarantino’s story of intertwining L.A. lives a dozen times, you’ll likely get a kick out of the banter between Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta) just as much as you did the first time they debated foot massages.

Following (1998)

Christopher Nolan made his feature-length directorial debut with Following, refining his non-linear storytelling that he perfected two years later with Memento. A man, whose hobby of following strangers starts out innocently enough, quickly gets in over his head when he meets a shady burglar and a woman in trouble. The classic film noir elements told in a fragmented style elevate this crime story that’s packed with relatively unknown faces. In its simplicity of elements, it’s not surprising Following was shot on just $6,000, but its execution and tight dialogue make it a memorable thriller.

Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

Lucky Number Slevin, The Boondock Saints and most Guy Ritchie films — at least his first three anyway — all took a beating from the critics for being carbon copies of Pulp Fiction. While the critics weren’t entirely incorrect on this, the movie-going public didn’t care and each did well at the box office. Sure, Lucky Number Slevin has the Pulp mix of dark humor, crime bosses and hitmen — Bruce Wills even shows up — but the film’s quick pace and crossword puzzle structure help make what could have been a disappointing Tarantino rip-off into a highly entertaining movie. Josh Hartnett plays a guy who’s simply trying to clear up a case of mistaken identity before he ends up on the wrong end of a gun in the feud between two mob bosses.

Cold In July (2014)

Cold In July didn’t get a wide release when it came out two years ago, which is a shame because it’s tense thriller with sharp performances that do the story justice. Set in a small Texas town in the late 1980s, Michael C. Hall plays a family man who goes to investigate a bump in the night and kills a home intruder. The action of self-defense puts him on the radar of the burglar’s father who’s recently been released from prison and aiming for revenge. While novelist Joe R. Lansdale could have rested on that premise alone and still likely turned in a decent crime thriller, he takes his characters in unexpected directions to create a slick and well-paced tale of three men wrapped up in a criminal underworld of murder and corruption. Don Johnson and Sam Shepard round out the trio.

Headhunters (2011)

Thrillers are rife with twists, and the Norwegian film Headhunters has that in spades. When an experienced art thief/headhunter (Aksel Hennie) gets on the wrong side of an ex-mercenary (Game Of Thrones‘s Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), he has to fight for survival, figure out who he can trust, and literally climb through a pool of sh** to escape with his life. It’s a darkly humorous cat-and-mouse game from the director of Passengers and The Imitation Game, with entertaining performances from Hennie and Coster-Waldau. A healthy suspension of disbelief may be necessary to make it through every turn in Headhunters, but it’s certainly worth the journey.

Nightcrawler (2014)

For lack of a better term, Jake Gyllenhaal is simply creepy as sh*t in his role as freelance camera man Louis Bloom in this neo-noir thriller written and directed by Dan Gilroy. Nightcrawler examines the sensationalism news outlets employ when covering crime stories, adding even more sinister implications to the old news wisdom “if it bleeds, it leads.”

No Country For Old Men (2007)

“Who’s this guy supposed to be, the ultimate badass?” asks Josh Brolin’s character in this fine addition to the Coen brothers’ resume. The ultimate badass that Brolin’s character is referring to would be the creepy hit-man (Javier Bardem) with a haircut only slightly less disturbing than his method of offing his victims. The thriller based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, follows a man who stumbles upon a loot of drug money in the west Texas desert and soon becomes the target of an unrelenting assassin. The film definitely has its place in the upper ranks of Coen brothers films and delivers moments of tension and ferocious violence on par with the likes of Fargo and Blood Simple.

Laura (1944)

The American crime noir from Hollywood’s golden age centers around a cop who slowly becomes obsessed with the woman whose murder he’s investigating. The film which has functioned a blueprint for the whodunit story has been praised by countless critics for its plot structure and use of characters to keep the viewer guessing until the very end. The Oscar-winning movie has been included in AFI’s 10 greatest mysteries series and was recognized for its cultural impact by the Library of Congress in 1999. If that weren’t enough, it has a rating of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes. So yeah, it’s pretty good.

Deadfall (2012)

When a casino heist goes awry, a murderous brother and sister part ways in the snowy backcountry of Michigan in an effort to make it over the Canadian border. Their plan becomes plagued with complications when a boxer fresh out of prison and on his way home for the Thanksgiving holiday picks up the sister on the side of the road. From there the bloodshed begins as the two families come together in a violent wake. While the movie at times feels like a paint by numbers Coen brothers thriller, performances by Sissy Spacek, Eric Bana, Charlie Hunnam and Olivia Wilde help it rise above the cliches.
