Tomato-stabbing robot is the stuff of nightmares

Elon Musk and others warned us about killer robots, but, if this video is to be trusted, the situation is more serious than it seems. 

Researchers from cybersecurity consultancy IOActive managed to hack into home assistance robot Alpha 2, produced in China by UBTech, and turn it into a tomato-stabbing Chucky. 

They simply updated the firmware of the device by accessing a USB port on the back of his head, thus controlling its functions. What's worse, researchers found out the robot's Android OS does not use code-signing to verify the signature when it downloads an update. 

That allows for the so-called "man-in-the-middle" attacks used by hackers to install malware in the device.  Read more...
